ContiOcean Containerized Nitrogen Generation System Applications on Vessels
Recently, ContiOcean successfully delivered its self-developed containerized nitrogen generation system onboard. This system is fully integrated into a standard-sized container certified by classification societies, allowing it to be transported and stacked like regular cargo containers. The system features air-cooled and explosion-proof designs, requiring no external cooling water or modifications. It is plug-and-play (with the option to equip a containerized generator for self-supply) and delivers nitrogen with performance indicators of 550 Nm³/h flow rate, 97% purity, and -60°C dew point. It supports dual modes for inerting and degassing. With its mobility, flexible deployment, and independent operation, the system is well-suited for most Type B tanks and scenarios requiring temporary nitrogen supply. For instance, the system can be hoisted onto the vessel before fuel tank maintenance, allowing inerting and degassing of the tank during the voyage and enabling immediate maintenance upon docking.

As a global leading maritime environmental protection equipment and system provider, ContiOcean has extensive technical expertise and experience in marine nitrogen generation systems. Its pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane-based nitrogen systems have also gained significant market recognition. Over the past three years, total orders have exceeded 100 units. Of these, 51% were for oil tankers and chemical carriers, predominantly featuring large PSA systems with a maximum flow rate of 4,500 Nm³/h, which began delivery in 2024. The remaining 49% were for container and other vessel types, mainly adopting membrane-based nitrogen systems. For example, a leading global shipping company procured 40 units of membrane nitrogen systems from ContiOcean in December 2022, with some ships in this project already successfully delivered. Additionally, ContiOcean offers one-stop solutions and supporting services for auxiliary products derived from nitrogen generation systems, such as high-pressure nitrogen boosters, DBB valve assemblies, high-pressure cylinder units, and PV breakers.
The rapid development of this product is attributed to its unique design and inherent advantages. Key components within the system, such as compressors, hollow fiber membranes, and automated control valves, are sourced from leading European brands. Combined with ContiOcean's proprietary design, this ensures reduced system air consumption and energy consumption while maintaining stability. Furthermore, the nitrogen systems are equipped with Playback and Troubleshooting functions, enabling real-time data playback, storage, and remote monitoring. These features significantly improve efficiency in addressing after-sales issues.
Looking ahead, as the IMO continues to enforce stricter green shipping and environmental regulations, traditional inert gas systems will gradually be replaced by nitrogen generation systems. The rise of alternative fuel ships will further drive the application of nitrogen systems. ContiOcean will adhere to its mission of “Promoting Green Energy, Protecting Blue Planet,” striving to advance the intelligence and eco-friendliness of marine nitrogen generation systems and solidifying its position as a leading supplier in the marine nitrogen industry.
